Everything You Need to Know

Shinkansen Travel Guide & Tips

Essential information on seat classes, baggage regulations, ticket validation, and food etiquette.

1. Ordinary Reserved vs Green Car vs Gran Class: Which to Choose?

Ordinary Reserved: Spacious 3x2 seating with deep recline, ample overhead racks, and power outlets. Perfect for most travelers.

Green Car (First Class): Ultra-quiet 2x2 wide leather/fabric seating, complimentary warm oshibori towels, footrests, and reading lights.

Gran Class (VIP Luxury): Available on Tohoku and Hokuriku lines: private 18-seat cabin with personal attendant, gourmet bento, and unlimited sake & wine.

2. How to Reserve Mount Fuji Window Side Seats
When traveling westbound from Tokyo toward Nagoya, Kyoto, or Shin-Osaka, select Seats E & D (Right Side of train). When traveling eastbound from Kyoto/Osaka toward Tokyo, select Seats A & B (Left Side). Around minute 40-45 near Shin-Fuji station, you will have uninterrupted views of Mount Fuji!
3. Oversized Baggage Regulations (Luggage over 160 cm)
Luggage whose total dimensions (Length + Width + Height) measure between 160 cm and 250 cm requires an Oversized Baggage Area Reservation on Tokaido, Sanyo, and Kyushu lines. Standard carry-ons and medium suitcases fit comfortably on the overhead racks above your seat free of charge without special reservations.
4. Japan Rail Pass (JR Pass) vs Single Digital Tickets
Following JR Pass price revisions, point-to-point digital tickets for Tokyo ↔ Kyoto ↔ Osaka are frequently more economical and flexible than buying a 7-day or 14-day JR Pass. Individual tickets also grant access to the fastest Nozomi and Mizuho super-expresses without paying extra supplement surcharges.
5. Food & Drinks: The Japanese Ekiben Experience
Unlike local commuter subways where eating is discouraged, eating and drinking on the Shinkansen is an essential cultural tradition. Pick up an Ekiben (station bento box featuring local specialties like Wagyu beef, Kyoto sushi, or Sendai ox tongue) at the station before boarding!
